I was excited to meet a world where your life force actually counts as currency, and these debt collectors, who are basically leeches. Except they don't just take, they have to give the life back, and if the taking process is exhilarating, the giving one is quite the opposite.

Most of the concepts were pretty well explained, and there's plenty of tension. Some things related to the collecting procedure may induce addiction and it was very thrilling to read what the characters were feeling/observing.

It's a short story, there cannot be much character development, but I did have trouble connecting with Lirium. Not so much because he is not very likeable in the first place, but mostly because I felt he rambled a bit too much. However, I did sort of understand why he came to become that person, or at least glimpsed it a bit, and the ending was somewhat helpful, at least I found it open enough to contemplate the possibility.

The cover was pretty neat. Again, I feel the synopsis gave away too much. When I am reading a dystopian tale, I prefer to discover most of what the world is about, as well as the character development, through reading the book, not the blurb.

Overall I felt the story is above average. I enjoyed the ideas, just wish they had been developed more.
I think I would like to keep reading the series, this sort of teaser piqued my interest.

OMG! This series is amazing! This post is a review of Delirium (Debt Collector #1) but since I have read the whole first season as well as listened to it too, it may be a little difficult to just talk about book #1.

I have to say that episode one was unbelievable and I was hooked from the very first chapter. Lirium is a collector of life energy and has orders to pass that energy on to those who are going to make a difference in this world. He does get to keep a percentage of that life energy for himself but he doesn't have the freedom to pass it on to anyone other than those select few who he is directed to transfer to.

But wait, what would happen if he did decide to give some of that energy to someone other than the high potentials? How would anyone know? And what could they do to him anyway? This life he leads isn't really the most glamorous life as it is. Can it get any worse?

Lirium really is a nice guy, and he is just doing what he has to do to survive. Nobody wants to be a debt collector, but hey, someone has to do it. Might as well be him as anyone else.

The whole idea of a bunch of debt collectors out there, collecting life energy and passing it on, sort of just blows my mind. This whole series takes a great imagination that I am totally in awe of. I guess that is why I am not a writer, but just a reader who gets to enjoy these words.

This first season was so captivating and I enjoyed both reading it and listening to it. I can't wait to get started on season 2, being released soon.
Quinn's premise that life energy can be quantified, and that the government decides who gets how much, is an interesting one because it has a lot of potential for asking important questions about the value of life, how society views aging and death, and the morality of making those decisions.
Yet, this book focuses on the angst-ridden titular character. The story is barely long enough to introduce the basics of how the world works, who the main character is, and what motivates him. These stories were intended to be read serially, and a collection of them make up what the author calls a "season". I think the idea is that more frequent releases of shorter works helps with cash flow.
For those of us who are used to bingeing on whole seasons of TV in one sitting, this format felt too short. Hopefully, we'll see all the installments gathered together in a collection. The author is good at getting things published promptly, so the wait shouldn't be unbearable.
This serial novel must be read in order. This is the first episode.

Lirium is a Debt Collector. He comes to call when your debt is larger than the good you will potentially do for society. When your time is up a Collector comes to Transfer you out...In essence drain your life energy to be put to better use elsewhere. This life transfer is the biggest and best high available and on top of that it erases the signs of aging and makes you healthier and helps you live longer.

This story is about an extremely dystopian world where instead of life insurance equations to say how long you might live there are equations of debt versus your potential worth to society. When those two balance then your life is ended so that some more deserving and worthwhile person may live that much longer and better. The average person does not fall into this elite company and eventually most people pay for their debt with the remainder of their lives.

I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading Agony (Debt Collector 2) sometime in the near future! If they really make this into a video game I will certainly play it!
