WELL WRITTEN, SUSPENSEFUL
Great writing. The characters are intriguing.
Another great historical series from the roman era. This is the one'd missed and pleasure it was to catch up with old friends. A funny thing always happens on the way to the forum.
The third in the series, but not nearly as absorbing as the first two. Corvinus is still a compelling (and witty) central character, and the Roman atmosphere is still excellently drawn. But this one takes Corvinus out of the realm of high politics into that of art theft, which I find less interesting
Corvinus, though a wealthy citizen in ancient Rome, is written as a wise-cracking private eye in the mode of a noir or pulp detective. The fun of these books is their great attention to period detail, the way Wishart weaves plausible stories into and through real-life events that actually happened in ancient Rome, and observing Corvinus as he (and his smarter-than-him wife Perilla) puzzle out each mystery.
I already own most of the Marcus Corvinus books in paperback, but could never find this one until I found it here. I'm picky about detail in historical mysteries set in periods I know well, but when I don't, I'm happy with convincingly consistent ones in those I know less well. These books fill that criterion and I really enjoy the characters in these. I've been a Marcus fan for years and was really happy to fill this gap in my collection, even if it is a lot harder to lend than a paperback.
I hate panning this book but although the second half was fast moving and exciting, the first half was so slow that I almost gave up on it before the action started. I suggest that you stick with it, possibly skim until you get halfway through (although if you do, you'll probably miss clues, so if you like figuring things out yourself, just push through it).
My favorite bit in this book was Corvinus buying a parrot because it looked like his uncle the consul, only to discover that it had very bad language.
